Siliguri Municipal Corporation Elections

The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) election saw a turnout of 80% on Sunday without any untoward incident being reported from

anywhere. The civic poll is important for both Left Front and Trinamool Congress the former to gain some ground after a string of losses and the latter to consolidate its position further. The results will be announced on Tuesday.

The Left, which was battered in the last panchayat, Lok Sabha and municipal polls, is desperately hoping for a win in Siliguri. What’s more, party leaders believe that winning the SMC will help stop the disintegration in the party.

The election also directly involves Asok Bhattacharya, the local MLA whom the LF has always projected as the key man for Siliguri’s development. This time, the party leadership is banking on him like never before.

The result will also reflect the position of Bhattacharya and his party for the 2011 Assembly polls. Retaining the Siliguri civic board would certainly be a boost for the party since the Siliguri Assembly seat comprises of the 33 civic wards (excluding the 14 added wards in Jalpaiguri district).

The Opposition has nothing to lose in the SMC election. They had won only 11 seats in the 2004 municipal polls here. This time, Trinamool and Congress leaders who are jointly taking on the Left believe that the results will improve greatly.
